The 2024 Calendar Year Deadlines

In this post I will be highlighting the important dates in the 2024 calendar year which you may need to know when it comes to filing self-assessment tax returns.

31st January 2024 – Online Tax Return and Payment Deadline

This is the first important date in any calendar year and it marks the final deadline to file and pay the taxes due on the 2022-23 tax year. You may file and pay it much earlier – leaving it even one day late will incur a £100 penalty from HMRC. If payments on account are required, this is also the date of the first payment on account for the 2023-24

6th April 2024 – Happy New (Tax) Year

The is the first day of the 2024-25 tax year. The allowances and taxes may have changed from the previous tax year so keep up to date with what’s new to aid you in planning your finances. This day also marks the first day in which you may file and pay your taxes for the 2023-24 tax year. The final date to file and pay will be 31st January 2025.

31st July 2024 – Second Payment on Account

Your second payment on account, if you are required to make payments on account, is due on this date for the 2023-24 tax year. Your payments on account are estimates of your next tax bill based on the previous one. If you earn less than predicted and end up overpaying, then you will be in credit or can opt for a refund of that overpaid tax. If you earn more than predicted, you may need to pay a “balancing payment” on 31st January 2025 to make up the extra taxes due.

5th October 2024 – Self-Assessment Registration

To pay your 2024-24 tax bill on time, you need to have registered for self-assessment by this date if you have never done so before. If you have already registered or sent a tax return previously then you can disregard this deadline.

31st October 2024 – Paper Tax Return Deadline

Paper tax returns, for those that have opted to submit them via post, must be sent off to HMRC by this date.

30th December 2024 – Online Tax Return (for PAYE tax payments)

This is a deadline for your online tax return if you would rather repay your tax bill through 12 monthly repayments via PAYE. There are certain conditions which must be met to be eligible for this method of repayment, one of which being that the tax you owe is less than £3,000.

31st January 2025 – Online Tax Return and Payment Deadline

Both the tax return and the payment for the 2023-24 tax year need to have been submitted by midnight 31st January 2025 to avoid any penalties being incurred. The returns may be submitted as early as April and the payments on the tax bill can still be left as late as this day. This may also be the date of the first payment on account for the 2024-25 tax year.

Plan your taxes

It is important to keep these dates in mind and be proactive in your tax affairs. By planning your finances wisely and anticipating the deadlines, you may avoid any unforeseen delays which may be caused by IT problems, online bank payments or postal issues. Filing your return early may also give you a heads up on what your tax bill will be at the payment deadline.
